Its time for WoD Modding! (Or no?)

Hey guys! In August I will come back again. ^_^

So lets discuss theme which makes me sad. Why we don't modding on WoD? (Better hitextures, better graphic, better UI etc)

i'm already on it, but don't expect help for wod modding here on other modding forums, 95% of the content is for wotlk.

Yep, really it will be better. But if we cant modding WoD, we could modding Legion I mean.

I think that it's quite useless to mod on wod only to have better graphics, because of the retroporting of course but also because graphics aren't that important of course it's nice to have a game that looks better. But I've spent probably thousands of hours on minecraft even though graphics are good but even so, the game can still be beautiful.

For me you should mod on wod if you want to use new functionality that aren't in wotlk.

I prefer modding on wotlk because we have a lot more tools than on wod and we know how to do many things, the core is way more stable/complete on lk, ...

It's a lot easier to do what I want on lk, and thus create more content.

But I'll probably ditch wotlk in the future (a few years maybe ? x)).

So if you want to do wod modding, go ahead, and share things to try to appeal people into wod modding, because let's be honest : if nobody makes tools/tutorials/... most of those who would be ok doing wod modding will stay on lk because of all the unknown and the extra work it would require.

I mean, 3.3.5a is good for RP projects... Mb PvP too. But its too old for PvE and other MASSIVE projects.
Also, I bad in serverside (I want to learn it but don't have enough time, mb little bit later I will start this)

Nah, it's kinda ankward to be alone working on wod and everybody around working harder on wotlk.

A community based on wod will be better (I'm not trolling this time), but i stay logic, this will probably never exists.

How can we start working on WoD when there are no tools? I'd gladly jump in after my current project but I do not even see the possibility to make proper patches for WoD so far.

I mean, we can, because we have converters.

So, we can create content on 3.3.5 (but only custom) maps, m2s, wmos and convert it to elder version of WoW.

Big problem for me it's WoD database (dbc/db2 etc) but I know it is real. Because some guys made moded WoD client for 3 month. With custom PvP non-class system, they remake interface etc. So its real, but we need more tools for it not for 3.3.5.

There is no CASC creator tool. You have to use hacky folder reading. Unless there is something to properly patch the client, it is useless for me. Someone could actually add support for MPQs back to it through things similar to TOM_RUS' WoWAddin.dll. I do not know how hard it is but I think you need to hook client's file loading functions and load MPQs with stormlib after CASC. I don't know if these functions are reversed or if it is possible at all but this would be nice.

If there is nothing to patch the client, there is no point to mod it. You can't ship loads of files to the end user right to the folder. Well, you can and pretty easily but it does not feel right.

Yes, for now WoD modding is asspain, but we need to start move forward. Start to create new soft etc.

That is right but the entry point of making modding tools for any game is checking if it can be modded at all. WoD can be modded. Then comes a question how we can load the files. Through a hacky folder reading with naked files when a user can just accidentally or not accidentally delete something and it will be your pain in the ass to solve it. A user can just erase folder with m2 models for example. The client will handle that just fine but the player would be able to pass to the places he is not supposed to. That is just an example.

Yeah, and this is why i have "made" a launcher for my server

It's simple, just create folder in your wow root folder and add files inside.

If a folder/file is missing, the launcher recreate it, so even if people delete folder, they can redownload the content easily

i think WoW 6.2.4 is the new 3.3.5a i work currently with my team on a 6.2.4 server and we can do anything like 3.3.5 custom Map, custom scripts, custom DBC/DB2 Edits and a custom Frame-/GlueXML. Its hard but i think WoD+ Modding is the future. And if you convert anything for WoD you can use it in Legion too :)

That still feels hacky. Unless we manage to pack files into something like an acrhive that feels hacky.

yes but understanding casc system and a way to use it for creating custom patch seems really difficult.

As far as I was told, CASC archives can be created but there is a unique key for every WoW build that allows you to do it. We do not know the algorythm Blizzard uses to generate those keys if there is even any. So, guys who develop CASC software do not want to add support for creating new archives because it feels hacky for them too to make them version dependent.

Yes, this is what I'm talking about. What about glue/frameXML, it's possible and simple like 3.3.5a or little bit difficult?

How does it work with Wow Model Viewer ? Can it load the custom models from the folders or it needs casc format only ?
